Cygnus X - 2 , super - Eddington mass transfer , and pulsar binaries
We consider the unusual evolutionary state of the secondary star in Cygnus X-2. Spectroscopic data give a low mass (M 2 ≃ 0.5 − 0.7M ⊙) and yet a large radius (R 2 ≃ 7R ⊙) and high luminosity (L 2 ≃ 150L ⊙). We show that this star closely resembles a remnant of early massive Case B evolution, during which the neutron star ejected most of the ∼ 3M ⊙ transferred from the donor (initial mass M 2i ...

متن کاملThe identification of an optical counterpart to the super - Eddington X - ray source , NGC 5204 X - 1 3
We report the identification of a possible optical counterpart to the super-Eddington X-ray source NGC 5204 X-1. New CHANDRA data shows that the X-ray source is point-like, with a luminosity of 5.2 × 10 erg s (0.5 8 keV). It displays mediumand long-term X-ray variability in observations spanning a period of 20 years. The accurate CHANDRA position allows us to identify a blue optical continuum s...
متن کاملDiscovery of an X–ray Pulsar in the Low–mass X-ray Binary 2a 1822–371
We report the discovery of 0.59 s X–ray pulsations from the low–mass X–ray binary, 5.57 hr dipping and eclipsing ADC source 2A 1822–371. Pulse arrival time analysis indicates a circular orbit with e <0.03 (95% confidence) and an asini for the neutron star of 1.006(5) lightseconds, implying a mass function of (2.03± 0.03)× 10M⊙. The barycentric pulse period was 0.59325(2) s in 1996.270 and 0.593...
